Sugar's Effect on Teeth

September 16th, 2014

As parents, we all know that sugar isn't good for our kids' health.  Dentists always tell us to reduce our children's sugar intake.  But why is that?  Here's a quick breakdown on how sugar affects your teeth.

Tooth decay isn't actually caused by sugar, it is just acerbated by it.  When we eat sugar, it coats our teeth and bacteria clings to it.  Saliva has a hard time washing away the bacteria because the sugar acts as an adhesive.  As the bacteria clings to our teeth, it produces an acid which slowly erodes the tooth.  The longer the bacteria clings to our tooth, the more it decays.

Reducing your sugar intake, brushing your teeth, and flossing can all help stop this harmful process in your mouth.

School's in Session: Making Brushing Part of Your Routine

September 3rd, 2014

With school back in session, families settle back into familiar routines: bedtimes, drives to school, and homework time.  As your kids get used to their new routines, make sure brushing at least twice daily is part of it.  Here are some tips to make it happen:

  • Make brushing the first thing they do after eating in the morning.  This helps solidify that brushing should occur after eating meals.
  • Ensure brushing is part of a night time routine.  Just as important as getting into pajamas and reading stories, you should make sure kids brush before going to bed.
  • Use timers and sing songs to enforce how long to brush.  This will ensure that kids spend enough time at each session getting their teeth clean.
  • Place floss next to the toothbrush.  If you use disposable flossing picks, then kids will know they need to floss as part of their brushing session.

Eating Toward Healthier Teeth

August 20th, 2014

We all know that eating healthy makes for a better smile, but what exactly does that mean?  Here's a list of foods and how they help keep your pearly whites looking great:

Crunchy fruits and veggies like apples and carrots are natural scrubbers and help remove plaque from your teeth.

Dairy products like milk and yogurt strengthen all bones, even teeth, due to their high calcium content.

Foods with high vitamin C don't just help during cold season.  They also promote healthy gums.

Leafy greens like spinach and kale have phosphorus, which helps your body absorb calcium.

The Importance of Baby Teeth

July 30th, 2014

For the parents of an infant, baby teeth is one of those precious milestones to look forward to, alongside first words and steps.  But baby teeth are more than just a page in your child's scrapbook.  Primary (or baby) teeth are important for many reasons:

  1. They play a role in proper chewing and eating.
  2. They help with speech development
  3. They hold space for permanent teeth, guiding them into the correct position.
  4. They aid in normal development of jaw bones and muscles.
  5. They make our toddlers' young smiles look great.

So don't neglect the growth of baby teeth.  As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we can help you keep your child's baby teeth healthy.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522 if you have any questions.
