What's a Cavity?

December 3rd, 2014

Parents are always on the lookout for cavities, but what exactly are they?  This posts gives a more in-depth look on this common childhood ailment.

Cavities are tiny holes or openings that form permanently on the hard surface area of your teeth.  If left untreated, they can grow larger and penetrate deeper into the tooth, causing toothaches, infections or even tooth loss.  You can treat a cavity with simple fluoride treatments if it's just getting started, but treatment can also include fillings, root canals, crowns or even removal of the tooth.

As far as cavities go, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  By taking proper care of your teeth (i.e. regular brushing, flossing, and limiting sugary foods and drinks), you can prevent most cavities from ever forming.

Cheese and Your Child's Teeth

November 8th, 2014

We've long known that dairy products contain high amounts of calcium, which can help make strong teeth, but did you know eating cheese can also improve your child's dental health?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recent studies have shown that eating cheese at the end of a meal or as a snack helps fight cavities.  Cheese helps to produce saliva, which clears the mouth of debris and protects teeth from acids that weaken them. In addition, calcium and phosphorous in cheese lowers plaque’s ph level and works to re-mineralize the enamel of your child’s teeth.

What is Gingivitis?

October 15th, 2014

You've probably heard of gingivitis in a toothpaste commercial, but you might only have a vague idea of what it is.  Our latest blog post gives more concrete details on this common dental problem.

Gingivitis is a generally mild inflammation of the gums that can cause redness and swelling.  It occurs when bacteria found in foods sticks to your teeth and forms plaque.  After a few days plaque can harden into tartar, which makes brushing and flossing less effective, creating a shield for the bacteria to harm your gums.

The symptoms of gingivitis can be so mild that you don't notice it, but left untreated can lead to more serious types of gum disease, which is one reason we recommend seeing the dentist on a semiannual basis.  Fortunately, you can prevent gingivitis from forming at home by practicing good oral hygiene, i.e. brushing and flossing.

What Should You Consider a Snack?

September 29th, 2014

Here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we see all sorts of kids at various stages of their development.  Many times we ask parents what their kids' eating habits are so we can make recommendations for better dental health.  One thing that frequently comes up is snacking.

We define snacking as any time a child eats or drinks anything besides water.  This means that if your child drinks milk or juice in between meals, we consider it a snack.  The reason?  Any food or drink (besides water) that coats the teeth can cause tooth decay.

We recommend that you keep your child's snacking to a minimum in order to avoid tooth decay.  Whenever possible, give your child non-water beverages with their meals instead of in-between meals.  This will help your child maintain healthy teeth for a longer time.
