February is National Children's Dental Health Month

February 4th, 2015

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.  This year's theme is "Defeat Monster Mouth."*

If you're looking for fun ways to teach your kids about dental health, the American Dental Association has some great worksheets and activities.  You can read about them at the National Children's Dental Health Month website.  The resources on these pages are great for schools, churches, and other youth groups to teach local kids the importance of dental health.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions about your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Flossing Your Kid's Teeth

January 22nd, 2015

Flossing is one of those things that we all know we should do, but we don't.  Even for kids, it's important to floss daily.  Here are some tips for getting into healthy flossing habits:

  • You should start flossing as soon as your child's teeth are touching each other, even if it's their baby teeth.
  • Make sure you pull the floss firmly against the teeth.  You're trying to remove food and other particles where your brush can't reach.
  • You can use either disposable flossers or regular dental floss.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions about your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Losing Baby Teeth

January 8th, 2015

Losing baby teeth is another growing milestone during the early school years.  Here are some general statistics about losing baby teeth:

  • Your child can start losing baby teeth as young as 4 and as old as 7.
  • Permanent teeth emerge in roughly the same pattern as baby teeth.  Your child will start getting new front teeth first and gradually work backward.
  • Your child will probably lose his or her last baby tooth in their early teens, at around the same time as they get 12-year molars.

As your child loses baby teeth, encourage them to wiggle, but don't yank.  Especially with the front teeth, you may see the permanent tooth before the baby tooth comes out, and that's okay as long as the tooth above is loose.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions about your child losing baby teeth, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

4 Tips for Holiday Snacking

December 17th, 2014

Happy holidays!

We all love food during the holidays, but here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we want to make sure all the food doesn't add up to dental problems for your kids.  Here are a few tips to enjoy holiday food and keep your healthy smile:

  • Brush more often as needed.  If your family goes to a holiday party and eats a lot of sugary treats, make sure to brush more often to reduce build-up on your teeth.
  • Keep down your juice intake.  We recommend no more than 4 to 6 ounces of juice for your child per day, although during the holidays it's understandable if you splurge a little.  But if you drink, say, 10 ounces of juice one day, try to limit the next day's intake.
  • Watch out for popcorn.  Holiday and movie popcorn are delicious this time of year, but little slivers of popcorn can easily get stuck in between your gums and teeth.  Make sure to floss your children after eating popcorn.
  • Stay active!  It's easy to get involved in eating, but sometimes exercise can fall to the wayside.  Try to keep your kids active as much as possible.  You can always offer some fun activities like basketball or soccer during a family get-together.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522 if you have any questions.
