What is Gingivitis?

August 25th, 2016

Commercials for toothpaste always talk about gingivitis.  It sounds scary, but what exactly is it?

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that causes your gums to be irritated, turn red, or swell.  Although it can be mild, you should treat gingivitis so it does not turn into a more serious gum disease, or worse, cause you to lose a tooth.

Routine dental hygiene such as brushing and flossing will help prevent gingivitis.  Regular dental check-ups, such as the ones performed by Northwest Children's Dentistry, will help remove any plaque and tartar build-up on your child's teeth.

Back to School Nutrition

August 10th, 2016

It's that time of year again when parents are buying back to school supplies and gearing up for another year.  Children consume up to half of their daily caloric intake at school, so knowing what your child eats at school is important.

As children's dentists, we care about your child's dental well being year round.  Whether your kid eats a school-provided lunch or you are preparing lunch at home, here are some tips on what to provide during the academic year:

  • Limit juice intake to 4-6 ounces a day.  Juice consumption can cause cavities in young teeth.  Opt instead for water or milk.
  • Provide 1-2 servings of fruits or vegetables with every meal.  Fresh produce often helps clean children's teeth and often full of nutrients too.
  • Avoid processed food whenever possible.  Processed food tends to contain higher amounts of sugar, which can damage teeth.

Creating the Right Dental Environment for Your Child

July 28th, 2016

At Northwest Children's Dentistry, we know that creating a comfortable environment is important for kids coming into our office.  Any place away from home can seem scary to a kid, especially a medical office which has instruments and equipment a child may not be familiar with.  We take pride in making our office kid friendly from the moment you enter our office.

Here are ways we make our pediatric dental office pleasing to kids:

  • Decorating the office with bright, kid friendly colors and pictures.  Our waiting room includes kid friendly books and magazines, a hut to play pretend inside, and games to try.
  • Maintaining an open dental bay area where kids and parents have plenty of room to sit and relax.
  • Keeping the closed rooms (where x-rays and other dental procedures take place) bright and cheery.
  • Celebrating holidays and other festivities with "costume days" where the staff dresses up for the kids.
  • Encouraging kids and parents to ask questions about anything and everything we do.

Choosing the Right Toothpaste for Your Child

July 14th, 2016

There are literally hundreds of toothpaste options out there for your child.  Which one should you choose?

The most important thing you should look for when going toothpaste shopping is the "American Dental Association" logo of approval.  Their logo means the toothpaste has been tested by specialists who understand teeth.  If you use a brand of toothpaste without this recommendation, it could contain harsh abrasives that could hurt teeth.

The amount of toothpaste you use is also important to consider.  For toddlers, use only a slight smear of toothpaste while brushing.  For preschoolers up to early elementary aged kids, use only a pea-sized amount.  These young children often swallow toothpaste on accident, so keeping the toothpaste to this amount will minimize digestion while still giving you the advantages of using toothpaste.
