Vegetables and Your Child's Dental Health

June 30th, 2016

Every pediatric dentist will tell you that your child should eat vegetables, but why is that?  Here are some fun facts on how vegetables help keep your child's teeth healthy:

  • Raw vegetables like celery freshen breath and help clean plaque from teeth.
  • Vegetables high in vitamin C protect the tissue in your mouth, including gums, from bacterial infection.
  • Folic acid, found in leafy green vegetables, supports cell growth throughout the body, promoting a healthy mouth.
  • Eating raw carrots at the end of a meal increases saliva production, which reduces your risk of cavities.
  • Vegetables with high dietary fiber will massage teeth and gums, helping maintain clean teeth.

Sedation and Pediatric Dentistry

June 16th, 2016

At Northwest Children's Dentistry, we pride ourselves on emphasizing prevention and good dental hygiene.  Having good dental habits will go a long ways to avoid any procedures at our office.  But even the most vigilant parent will sometimes have a child who needs a dental treatment.

In many cases, sedation is not needed for dental procedures.  However, if your child has a high need for a procedure and has trouble sitting still, has low pain tolerance, has special needs, or depending on the treatment, we may recommend sedation.  Sedation dentistry is safe and endorsed by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

The two most common types of sedation we use at our office is nitrous oxide (commonly known as "laughing gas") or IV sedation, where the child is put to sleep.  If we recommend IV sedation, we will always take the time to sit down with you and explain why we recommend it and what you can expect, along with providing you forms to take home and think about.  As a parent, you will always be welcome to be with the child if we administer IV sedation.

Getting Kids Comfortable in the Dentist Chair

June 2nd, 2016

It's a common stereotype that people are afraid to go the dentist.  Add onto the fact that you might be taking a toddler or young child to see the dentist, and you might dread the appointment more than your child.  But here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we are trained pediatric dentists who take pride in making you and your child comfortable each time they visit the dentist.  We believe that positive experiences will encourage kids to want to return, which in turn increases the likelihood that your child will maintain healthy teeth over a lifetime.

Here are some of the ways we try to make our dental experience a pleasant one:

  • Explaining every step of the way: We let our patients know what we're doing before we do it so nothing is a surprise.
  • Creating an open environment: Our exam rooms are open so that you don't feel closed off and can see what's going on around you.
  • Encouraging questions: Knowledge gives you power, so we want you and your child to ask us as many questions as you need.
  • Using positive language: We avoid anxiety-inducing words that may cause your kid unnecessary worry.
  • Rewarding the experience: We give out small prizes to kids after the exam as a positive reminder of both their good behavior and a good experience.

Northwest Children's Dentistry Averages 5-Star Reviews

May 19th, 2016

At Northwest Children's Dentistry, we pride ourselves in providing top quality dental care for your child.  We want our little patients to have a positive experience in our office so they will want to return again.  This is why we carefully choose the pediatric dental words we use around kids, and we always spend extra time with parents explaining any and all questions.

That is why we are thrilled to have an average 5-star review on both Google and Yelp.  Read what some parents are saying about Northwest Children's Dentistry:

"My 2 boys have been coming here are over a year now.  I'm always greeting with a smile from all the staff and Dr Bunch.  The office is set up so the kids feel comfortable.  They always explain to the children, even my 23 month old, what they are doing in terms that they can understand."

"I was blown away this morning at how wonderful each of the staff members are at Northwest Children's Dentistry! Both my girls were apprehensive prior to the appointment but upon leaving they asked when their next appointment would be."

"Dr. Marshall was sweet and quick.  After getting his teeth all cleaned and accounted for, he received a token to pick out a toy in the main waiting area.  It was the only thing that motivated him to get through the cleaning so we were both excited about that!"

Our goal is to continue providing the children of Tucson top quality dental care to maintain this level of service.
