Why Your Toddler Should See a Pediatric Dentist

November 3rd, 2016

Parents know about the importance of dentists, but they may think that a young child like a toddler doesn't need to worry just yet.  Your kid just got his/her baby teeth, so there's no need to worry about a dentist, right?

The American Academy for Pediatric Dentistry actually recommends children begin routine visits around their first birthday.  Seeing a dentist early sets your child on the path to maintaining strong, healthy teeth for the rest of their lives. The younger a child is introduced to the dentist, the easier it is to develop positive associations that will follow them into adulthood.

Pediatric dentists like those at Northwest Children's Dentistry receive a year of specialized training to treat young children.  We know that dental visits can seem overwhelming to a small child, so we do everything in our power to make it a fun experience.  Prevention is also an integral part of our practice so any issues can be addressed and treated early or often avoided altogether.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

The Teal Pumpkin Project and Your Child's Dental Health

October 20th, 2016

Last year, we posted a popular blog about on non-food treats you can hand out for Halloween.  We encourage handing out stickers, play-doh and other fun goodies to avoid overloading your child with sugar, which can cause tooth decay.  As it turns out, there's another great reason to hand out non-food items at Halloween: children with food allergies.

Halloween can be a difficult time for kids with food allergies.  Some of the more common allergies, such as nuts, can be life-threatening for children.  These children want to participate in Halloween, but with a severe allergy, kids can't even eat food that has been processed in a factory that also handles nuts.  This can make Halloween stressful for these kids.

The Teal Pumpkin Project was created to raise awareness of this issue.  If you decide to hand out non-food treats this Halloween, simply place a teal pumpkin outside your door so that kids with food allergies know you are a safe place to get treats.  You can still hand out candy, but if you have other non-food options at hand, you can help include kids with food allergies into the festivities of Halloween.

The Visual Appeal of Metal-Free Fillings

October 6th, 2016

Northwest Children's Dentistry prides itself on prevention whenever possible, but there may come a time when your child needs a filling.  There are many different types of filling materials available, but metal-free fillings are popular because we can restore your child's smile so that you never notice the cavity.

Determining what type of filling is best for your child (either metal or metal-free) depends on location of the cavity and the aesthetics of how it looks.  We generally recommend metal-free fillings for front and other highly visible teeth because they can be color matched.  We can use them to repair chipped, broken, or cracked teeth.

Why Your Child Might Need Sealants

September 22nd, 2016

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  At Northwest Children's Dentistry, we pride ourselves in preventing dental problems before they start.  That is why sometimes we may recommend a sealant.

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating that we bond to a tooth's surface. Sometimes permanent molars erupt with deep pits and grooves on the chewing surface. These areas can be impossible to clean with even the best brushing skills. The sealant fills the deep pits and grooves, providing a barrier to keep food and bacteria out, thus reducing the risk of decay by up to 50%.

Each child is different, so if we do recommend a sealant, we will discuss the benefits to your child.
