Keeping your Toddler's Teeth Healthy

April 27th, 2017

Those baby teeth may be just growing in, but they play an important part of your children's overall health.  There are many ways you can keep your toddler's emerging teeth healthy:

  • Brush twice a day.  Even at this young age, baby teeth can use a little brushing.  It also instills lifelong healthy habits of brushing.
  • Limit juice to 4 to 6 oz. per day.  Drinking lots of juice can cause cavities in young teeth.  Offer your child water or milk instead.
  • Wean off bottles and sippy cups.  Sucking from a bottle or sippy pools the liquid around the child's teeth, where it can cause more damage.  Have your child move to regular cups as soon as they can handle it.
  • Don't offer a night time drink (unless it's water).  Drinking right before bed without brushing can increase your child's risk of cavities.  If your child needs a drink, you can offer water.

When Can My Child Use an Adult Toothbrush?

March 27th, 2017

Parents ask us many questions about dental care and decay prevention.  The best thing your child can do is brush regularly, twice a day for two minutes each.  When your child is a young, that often means with a smaller toothbrush.

When can your child use an adult toothbrush?  Generally, their mouths are big enough around 9 or 10 years of age.  The brush should fit comfortably in their mouths and should be able to reach their back teeth without gagging.  The same general rule of brushing teeth twice a day for two minutes each still applies.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

How Your Child Benefits from Regular Dental Checkups

March 16th, 2017

Working in a team of experienced pediatric dentists and staff, we see a lot of childhood dental problems.  Some of these problems are unavoidable.  Kids get into accidents that affect their teeth.  Some diseases are just luck on the draw.  We're here to help as you need it.  Fortunately, you can reduce your child's risk of needing invasive dental work by having routine checkups.

During checkups, our staff will examine your teeth.  We will tell you about problem areas and mark them in your child's file, to make sure we monitor those areas over time.  Regular in-office cleanings will also ensure you're not missing brushing and flossing key spots at home.  If we catch a problem early, we may be able to recommend a non-invasive way for you to keep your child's teeth strong at home.

Our end goal is to have your child only see us for routine checkups, if at all possible.  Healthy young teeth age into working older teeth that keeps your child smiling throughout a lifetime.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.
