5 Reasons to Brush Your Teeth

June 16th, 2015

Everyone knows that brushing is essential to dental health, but maybe you didn't know why.  There are tons of reasons for your and your child to brush your teeth several times a day.  Here are our top favorite reasons:

  1. Avoid common dental problems such as cavities and gingivitis.
  2. Save money by preventing dental diseases rather than dealing with their consequences.
  3. Flash a more beautiful smile with whiter teeth.
  4. Feel more clean with nice smelling breath.
  5. Live longer.  Several studies show that that not brushing your teeth can lead to things like heart attacks and strokes.

Summer Sports and Your Child's Teeth

May 28th, 2015

It's summertime and that means no school and more time for fun activities like sports.  While you may not see a correlation between changing of the seasons and your child's teeth, we know as pediatric dentists that summer sports can have an impact on your child's dental health.

One thing we pride ourselves on at Northwest Children's Dentistry is preventative care.  We strongly believe an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  So if you have a child playing a new sport this summer, especially one with the potential for high impact and contact with other kids, we recommend sports guards.  We create custom mouth pieces for your child, which are more comfortable for your child to wear while they are on the field or at the gym.

If you want to read more about sports injury prevention, you can read what the American Dental Association has to say about mouth guards.

What Should You Do About Wisdom Teeth?

May 11th, 2015

Your wisdom teeth begin to form around your tenth birthday, but generally don't erupt into your mouth (if at all) until you are 17 to 25 years of age.  Because the age when wisdom teeth form, many parents of teenagers ask us questions about them.

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed.  If they develop and erupt in the mouth normally, then you should not have issues.  Generally, wisdom teeth become an issue when they are  impacted.  This means they will grow into other teeth or parts of the mouth, which could damage those areas and causes pain.

Here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we will monitor the growth of your child's wisdom teeth through X-rays.  If we see a problem, we will be able to point it out to you and tell you when it might be time to talk to a specialist about extraction.

What Could be the Cause of Your Child's Sudden Bad Breath?

April 22nd, 2015

We receive a lot of questions from parents either at the office or online.  Recently, a parent asked us why her child suddenly had bad breath, so we thought we would discuss our response in our latest blog.

If your child has allergies or recently had a respiratory ailment, sometimes the mucus that collects in the child's throat can cause an onset of sudden bad breath.  Poor dental hygiene can also be a culprit.

We always encourage our patients to call us if something that this were to occur.  That way we can discuss your child and what could be the root cause of bad breath.   If you have any questions about your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.
