Smiling Toward a New School Year

August 12th, 2015

Did you know that according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, students around the nation miss more than 51 school hours per year because of dental problems or related conditions?  Kids experiencing dental pain can't focus on school work and often miss class.

Make sure routine dental maintenance if part of your child's school year.  Teach your kids to floss once a day and brush twice with a fluoride toothpaste.  Try to limit sugary drinks and foods.  Schedule a visit with a pediatric dentist twice a year to help provide your child with an oral health assessment.  These can help prevent cavities and gingivitis in children.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we're happy to give you guidance on how to manage your child's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Why Fluoride Supplements are Important

July 29th, 2015

Tucson, Arizona doesn't have fluoridated tap water, so it's important to make sure your child supplements with fluoride in other ways.  In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, "Widespread use of fluoride has been a major factor in the decline in prevalence and severity of dental caries in the US and other economically developed countries."  This stops dental problems from happening with young children, giving kids greater odds of having healthy teeth well into adulthood.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we're happy to give you guidance on how much fluoride supplements your child needs.  Different age groups of children need different doses, and other factors can also play into how much you should give your child.

If you have any questions about fluoride and your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

When You Should Replace Your Toothbrush

July 16th, 2015

We've all had that moment when we look at our old toothbrush and realize it's time to get a new one.  But if you ask different people, you may get different opinions about when it's the right time to replace your toothbrush.

The American Dental Assocation recommends that you change your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.  This rule is the same for parents and children.  In order to protect your toothbrush, they also recommend:

  • Not to share toothbrushes to minimize passing on illness to others.
  • Rinsing a toothbrush after each use to keep it clean.
  • Not covering a toothbrush to discourage microorganisms growing in a moist environment.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions about your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Tooth Decay: The Most Chronic Childhood Disease

July 2nd, 2015

If you were asked what was the most chronic childhood illness, you might come up with a lot of potential answers, but tooth decay, is the #1  most common chronic childhood disease.  According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, tooth decay in children is five times more common than asthma, four times more common than early childhood obesity, and 20 times more common than diabetes.

Tooth decay is important to prevent because it leads to painful toothaches, infections, and even tooth loss.  You may not think it's a big deal if it's a baby tooth, but losing baby teeth can impact a child's life forever by prematurely shifting teeth and causing other deep tissue infections.

Fortunately, you can minimize your child's risk of getting tooth decay by enforcing regular brushing and flossing habits.  If you catch decay early on, you may be able to restore tooth enamel with fluoride treatments.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions about your child's dental health, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.
