Sedation Dentistry

January 18th, 2018

At Northwest Children's Dentistry, we receive a lot of questions from parents, especially when a child needs a dental procedure.  Some of the most common questions revolve around sedation.

Sedation dentistry is the use of relaxation techniques to accomplish more comfortable dental treatment.  Sedation dentistry is safe and endorsed by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.  Our pediatric dentists may suggest sedation dentistry for a variety of reasons, including during a major treatment, dental anxiety, low pain tolerance, trouble holding still, or for special needs patients.

The two most common types of sedation we use at our office is nitrous oxide (commonly known as “laughing gas”) or IV sedation, where the child is put to sleep.

If we recommend sedation dentistry, we will always sit down with you and explain why we recommend it.  As a parent, you will know what you can expect and have ample opportunity to ask us questions about any procedures done on your child.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Make Dental Health Your New Year's Resolution

January 4th, 2018

Happy New Year!   If you're looking to start 2018 off right, how about a New Year's resolution to keep your kids' teeth healthy.  It's easier than you think.  Here are some tips to help you:

  • Brush and floss at the same time each day.  People do better when they make healthy choices a habit.  Have your kids brush and floss at the same time each day, preferably after meals.  This will help them establish the best practice against tooth decay: preventative cleaning.
  • Reduce your sugar intake.  Resolve to cut back on sugar and feel health benefits for your entire body, including your teeth.  Limiting things like juice and candy can go a long way towards this goal.
  • Know what to do in case of a dental emergency.  We've got a handy list of what to do in case of dental emergencies that should help you in many common situations.
  • Schedule dental cleanings twice a year.  As your local pediatric dentist in Tucson, we'd much rather clean healthy teeth than perform procedures.  Checking your kids' teeth twice a year gives us a chance to give you personalized tips on how to avoid common dental ailments.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

What to Do if Your Child Loses a Permanent Tooth

November 30th, 2017

It's every parent's worst dental nightmare: your kid has an accident and loses a permanent tooth.  You may think your child is out of luck, but there are still things you can do.  Follow these steps to help save the child's tooth:

  1. First, find the tooth. Handle it by the crown (top) of the tooth, not by the root.  In this case, handling the tooth less is better than more.
  2. Very GENTLY rinse the tooth with water. DO NOT clean with soap.
  3. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the child hold the tooth in place by biting down on gauze. If you cannot re-insert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk.  You can use ice water in a pinch if milk is not available. If the patient is old enough, the tooth may also be carried in the patient’s mouth (beside the cheek).
  4. Time is a critical in saving the tooth, so please call us immediately for an emergency consultation.
