The Dental Dangers of Lip and Tongue Piercings

March 1st, 2018

Do you have a teenager who wants to get a lip or tongue piercing?  It may look cool, but oral piercings pose many hazards to your child's teeth.

  • Infection and Swelling: The most common complaint after an oral piercing is infection and swelling.  This can cause pain, and if left untreated in some cases, create dental problems down the road.
  • Chipped or cracked teeth: Hard metal studs inside the mouth can cause damage to the teeth, which may require dental procedures to fix.
  • Nerve Damage: A tongue piercing can lead to nerve damage.  Although most will go away a few hours after the piercing, there is a risk for more long-term damage that will require your child see a pediatric dentist.  Severe nerve damage can affect your child's sense of taste and smell.

If your child is serious about getting an oral piercing, make sure they know the risks and have them be prepared to talk to their dentist if any of the above problems occur.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Happy 2018 National Children's Dental Health Month!

February 15th, 2018

Every February, we celebrate National Children's Dental Health Month to spread awareness about good dental hygiene and your child.  The American Dental Association has chosen “Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth for a healthy smile” as this year's theme!

You can download posters, coloring sheets, and other educational resources following the link below:

Feel free to share these resources with your child’s preschool, school, or after school program to maintain those beautiful smiles.

Thumb Sucking and Your Child's Dental Health

January 30th, 2018

Kids can have lots of bad habits, but one that we hear about frequently is thumb sucking.  Fortunately, thumb sucking is quite common and harmless for babies and toddlers.  Many children will even stop on their own.

If your child reaches 2.5 years old and still sucks their thumb, it may be time to intervene.  We strongly encourage using positive reinforcement and rewards to break the habit.  A reward chart for not sucking a thumb can motivate some children.  Even something as simple as excited, encouraging words can motivate many children to stop.

If you are still frustrated with this habit, talk to us about options.  We can give you personalized suggestions at your next appointment.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.
