Baby teeth sometimes get a bad rap as not being as "important" as the permanent teeth that grow in after them. Baby teeth, however, play an important role in children's dental development that should not be ignored.
Baby teeth play a role in proper chewing and eating. They promote correct speech development. They hold space for permanent teeth, guiding them into the correct position, which in turn aids in the normal development of jaw bones and muscles. Neglected baby tooth cavities can be painful and, in some cases, progress to serious infection. The back molars will last until your child is between 10 to 13 years of age. And finally, the aesthetics of nice baby teeth can give your kid a healthy-looking smile.

We all have memories of what going to the dentist means from our childhood. Some of us may remember our parents sitting in the lobby while having work done. New patients sometimes ask us if it is okay to accompany their child to the dentist chair.
The truth is, the pediatric dentists and staff at Northwest Children's Dentistry would actually prefer parents accompany children. We know the best way to maintain good teeth is preventative techniques, like brushing and flossing, and we need parents' help to make sure children have a consistent routine. To that end, our examination areas are open so that parents feel welcome with us. We encourage lots of questions and hope you won't hesitate to air all your concerns. At the end of the day, communication between our staff and parents will result in the best possible outcome for your child.

An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure. There are three basic prevention techniques that can drastically reduce the cavity formation. Let's go over each one in turn:
- Brushing: This one should come to no surprise to anyone. Brushing removes harmful bacteria that can cause cavities in your child's mouth. You should brush twice a day.
- Flossing: Flossing is like brushing in between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. Floss at least once a deal.
- Sealants: A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is bonded to the chewing surface of the tooth. The sealant fills the deep pits and grooves of molars, providing a barrier to keep food and bacteria out, thus reducing the risk of decay by up to 50%.

As your Tucson-based pediatric dentist, we receive all sorts of questions from our patients and their families. One that comes up periodically is: Does xylitol realy help reduce cavities?
The surprising answer is yes. Dental research shows that xylitol can help change the type of bacteria inside the mouth from cavity-causing bacteria to one that is less likely to cause cavities. Xylitol also helps reduce plaque formation and the amount of bacteria overall that sticks to teeth.
Xylitol is commonly purchased as a chewing gum and can be used by children who are mature enough to use it.
