Tooth Grinding and Your Child's Teeth

March 14th, 2019

Some of our young patients have a problem with tooth grinding.  You might hear your own child rubbing their teeth together.  The sound alone can make a parent go crazy.

Fortunately, tooth grinding is a common occurrence in young children. It may sound bad, but the child often stops doing it around 6 years old, wearing away only their baby teeth.  This makes any treatment to stop tooth grinding in young children usually unnecessary.

If your teenager has a tooth grinding problem, you may want to consider using a night guard.  A night guard is a thin piece of plastic, often molded to your child's teeth, to prevent them for wearing away their permanent teeth.  We can help outfit you with a night guard if we think it's necessary.

Permanent Tooth Coming in Behind Baby Tooth

February 11th, 2019

Children experience a lot of minor issues as they lose baby tooth and their permanent teeth come in.  One thing you might see is that the permanent tooth comes in before the baby tooth is out.  What should a parent do?

Called "shark teeth," this is actually a fairly common and harmless condition.  It happens most often with the child's front teeth, although it can happen elsewhere.  If the baby tooth is loose, encourage your child to wiggle it out.  If the tooth is not very loose, that means the baby tooth's roots may still be in place.  Please call our office to see if you need to schedule an appointment for us to extract the tooth.

Once the baby tooth is out, your child's tongue will push the tooth into its position naturally.  Oftentimes, no other treatment needs to be done.  If your child's permanent teeth has crowding issues, however, you may eventually need to see an orthodontist to have their teeth aligned into place.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to serve all your child's dental needs.  If you have any questions for our office, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

January 31st, 2019

As your pediatric dentists in Tucson, we handle many of your child's dental needs.  If your kid needs braces, however, you must see an orthodontist to correct those issues.  When does this occur?

The answer really will depend on your child, but as a general rule, many children can wait until all permanent teeth have come in before beginning orthodontic therapy. This usually occurs at around 10 to 13 years of age.  However, there are some specific cases in which a child could benefit from orthodontic intervention as early as 5 years of age.   We will help you navigate this process by keeping an eye on your child's teeth and providing recommendations based on our experience.
