"Painting" Your Child's Teeth: Fluoride

May 6th, 2019

If your child has come into our office, you may have heard us talking about "painting" your child's teeth.  You may wonder what we're talking about and why we call it "painting."

We are not, of course, actually painting your child's teeth a particular color.  What we are doing is applying fluoride varnish to the teeth.  Fluoride is a pediatric dentist's top disease prevention technique.  Studies have shown that fluoride can significantly reduce cavities in young children.  As strong believers of prevention, we want to reduce your child's risk of developing harmful dental problems.

We call this process "painting" teeth because it's something that any kid, even a toddler, can understand.  By using non-scary words to discuss our procedures, we aim to make your child's visit to our office a pleasant one.  We want them to be excited to come see the dentist.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to keep your child's smile healthy.  If you have any questions for our office, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

The Advantage of Metal-Free Fillings

April 22nd, 2019

If your child has significant tooth decay or damaged teeth, the pediatric dentists at Northwest Children's Dentistry can provide fillings to protect them.  While there are many different types of fillings, metal-free fillings have recently become popular.  Here's why.

  • Blend in with your child's smile.  It's much harder to see the difference between your child's natural tooth and a metal-free filling with color matching.
  • Fill in cavities.  Metal-free fillings can be used as a metal substitute for cavities.
  • Repair chipped, broken, or cracked teeth.  Resin material can fit in these gaps to restore teeth with these kinds of damages.

Different types of materials have advantages and disadvantages.  As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we can walk you through the pros and cons of each.  If you have any questions for our office, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Dentist Appointment

April 11th, 2019

Welcome new patients!  We get a lot of questions about what to expect at your first pediatric dental appointment.  The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you visit a dentist by the time they turn 1 year old.

Here's what to expect when you visit our office:

  • Welcoming environment.  We know that visiting a doctor or dentist can be intimidating for kids and parents alike, so we make our office as welcoming as possible.  Enjoy the comfort of the waiting room and the bright colors of our dental bays.
  • Encouraging questions.  We hope you come prepared with questions.  We are here to put you and your child at ease and will take our time to go over all your concerns.
  • Reviewing dental history.  We'll also ask you questions about your child's dental history.  We take all the information to give him or her our best care.
  • Demonstrating good dental hygiene.  The real work of taking care of your teeth happens at home, so we'll make sure you know all the brushing, flossing, and other dental care techniques to help your child's mouth stay health.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to serve all your child's dental needs.  If you have any questions for our office, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Encouraging Your Child to Floss and Brush Teeth

March 28th, 2019

Do you have a reluctant brusher or flosser?  A child who drags their feet to brush their teeth in the morning or at night?  Here are some tips to try to encourage your young child to brush more often.

  • Make brushing and flossing part of a daily routine.  Making brushing a natural part of every day will help reinforce to your child it's just something they do, like getting dressed in the morning.
  • Let them pick out dental supplies.  Young kids are more likely to opt in if they have choice.  Let them choose a favorite color toothbrush or a different kind of fluoride toothpaste.  This makes them feel like part of the dental process.
  • Create a rewards chart.  Sometimes kids just need a little push to make brushing or flossing a regular part of the day.  Hang up a rewards chart where kids earn a sticker for each time they brush or floss without you needing to remind them.  When they collect 20 stickers, give them a modest prize.
  • Show them you brush and floss too.  Being a good example to your kids goes a long way in showing that dental care is important at your house.
