3 New Twists on the Tooth Fairy

February 2nd, 2021

Many parents use the tooth fairy in order to encourage kids to look forward to losing their teeth. It makes sense we'd want to smooth a process in which bones are literally falling out of our children's mouths! We all know the whole "cash under the pillow" routine, but if you're looking for some different ways to play tooth fairy, you can try one of these variants.

  • Try a tooth fairy stash outside the bedroom door. Do you have trouble exchanging tooth for cash after your little ones have gone to sleep? Do they hear your come in the room, or worse, wait up for the tooth fairy? You can always create a special cup or plate outside the child's bedroom and tell them the tooth fairy only shows up after the child has gone to bed.
  • Have the tooth fairy leave a personal note. Instead of just leaving money, you could also type up a small note from your tooth fairy to give to your child. It might say how proud they are of wriggling their first tooth or the importance of brushing and flossing for clean teeth.
  • Leave non-money items. If you're not fond of stashing dollars or quarters, you could also leave a small toy or other prize from the tooth fairy. Just be careful about leaving sweets...we want to remind kids that the tooth fairy values healthy eating to reduce tooth decay!

Saliva and Dental Health

January 19th, 2021

We talk a lot about protecting teeth in this blog because that's the number one job of pediatric dentists. But did you also know that saliva plays a role in a healthy kid's mouth?

Saliva is produced by glands in the mouth around the cheek, tongue, and jaws. It contains water and other proteins that protect tooth enamel. Saliva helps clean your mouth between meals, rinsing food particles away. It would also be really hard to eat food without saliva. (Can you imagine swallowing toast without it?)

Healthy children have no problem generating enough saliva to meet their needs, but if your child experiences dry mouth, let us know. It could be they just need to drink more water, but it could also be a medical condition or a side effect of medication.

4 Ways to Battle Fear of the Dentist

January 4th, 2021

Dentists sometimes get a bad rap.  You've all heard the jokes comparing terrible experiences with "going to the dentist."  Here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we strive to create a positive environment for your kids.  We don't want kids to be afraid of us, so we do everything our power to reverse this negative stereotype.

You can help as a child's parent too.  Try the following tips to help reduce your child's learned fear of the dentist.

  1. Choose a dentist who is patient with kids.  We recommend that your child see a pediatric dentist simply because they are used to the different developmental stages of children.  It takes time and practice to provide care for little kids.
  2. Describe the dentist as a positive experience. If you talk about the dentist as a scary place, your kids will believe it.  Try instead to talk about the positive aspects of seeing a dentist, such as having a lifetime of healthy teeth.
  3. Minimize your use of "scary" dentist words. Some words can create anxiety for children.  For example, instead of "cavity," we may say "sick tooth."   This also makes what's happening more relevant to children, since many don't understand what a cavity is.
  4. Go to the dentist for your own routine cleanings. If kids know their parents see their dentists for their own care, it will help them understand how this is part of basic dental hygiene.
