Using Sedation at the Pediatric Dentist

April 5th, 2021

If your child needs to undergo certain procedures, we may recommend sedation. We know lots of parents have questions about how sedation works. Here are some facts about pediatric dentistry and sedation.

Sedation refers to the use of relaxation techniques to accomplish more comfortable treatment. Sedation is used to make patients feel more comfortable and calm during treatment. The pediatric dentists at Northwest Children's Dentistry recommend sedation for things like major treatments, low pain tolerance, and sometimes for dental anxiety.

There are several different types of sedation. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative commonly used during dental visits. IV sedation, also called a sleep visit, involves putting the patient to sleep so they are unconscious during their treatment.

Sedation is safe and endorsed by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Our staff always takes the time to explain why we recommend sedation and will answer any questions parents have about its use.

Best Pediatric Dental Practices During COVID-19

March 10th, 2021

Many of our patients and families have questions about how we've changed our routines due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a good question that we've spent almost a year thinking about and refining. We take our families' health very seriously, and we've taken every precaution to ensure you will have a safe experience in our office.

Some of the ways we've minimized the risk of COVID-19 at our dental practice include:

  • Seeing fewer patients: We've reduced our patient load so that we can maintain social distancing and less people inside our office at a given time.
  • More frequent, thorough cleaning: While we've always been strict about sanitizing our office, we increased the number of times we clean throughout the building, especially where families may interact.
  • Strict screening: We screen everyone who comes through our door every day, staff and families alike. We will re-schedule any patient we feel is has an elevated risk of having COVID-19.
  • Advanced air filtration: True-HEPA filtration systems are placed throughout our office for maximum coverage.
  • And lots more: You can read our full list of best pediatric dental practices we follow here.
