The Importance of Sports and Mouth Guards

December 16th, 2012

If you've got a kid, then you've got an athlete in the making.  As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we encourage your kids to stay fit by participating in sports.  We also encourage that you protect your child's or teen's teeth by investing in a sport or mouth guard, especially for high contact sports.

While you can buy a mouth guard at your local drugstore, coming into your local dentist and having one custom designed protects greater protection.  Your child will also be more likely to wear a sports guard if it fits properly and looks nice, which we strive to do with every one we design.  We can sweeten the deal by adding team colors and other personal touches to encourage your child to wear it more often.

When a child learns to wear mouth guards at an early age, they’re more likely to become an integral part of their sports routine.  So get them started today!

What to Do if Your Child Loses a Permanent Tooth

November 29th, 2012

Despite our best efforts as parents, teachers, coaches, and caregivers, dental emergencies happen.  This blog will help you prepare in the event a child loses a permanent tooth while under your supervision.  As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we care about your children's dental health and want to give you the best odds for putting the tooth back in place.

In the event that your child avulses (or knocks out) a permanent tooth, please contact your child's pediatric dentist immediately.  The tooth will have a better prognosis if it is put back into place immediately.  Your dentist and staff may be able to guide you through this process.  If you are unable to put the tooth back in place, your school may have a special solution for the tooth during transport to the dental office.  If you are at home, milk will also work.  Do no try to clean a dirty tooth yourself.  That can damage the tooth further.

The best treatment is always for the injury not to occur. Please remind your children to wear their safety gear such as helmets and sports guards.

Staying Fit During the Holidays

November 15th, 2012

Adults aren't the only one who have a hard time exercising during the holidays.  With access to holiday goodies and school in session, kids often get less exercise during this time of the year.

We here at Northwest Children's Dentistry encourage your kids to stay fit this season.  When kids stay active their entire body reaps the benefits, even their teeth.  We've chosen Trinity Dance and Gymnastics of Tucson as our November 2012 business of the month as a kick off to a great winter of fun and play.

If you don't have time for a class, consider building some active time in every part of your day.  Take a walk with your kids after dinner.  Schedule some playground time on the weekend.  Do a silly dance in the backyard.  Living in an area that remains relatively warm through the year has its advantages, so don't let it go to waste!

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we not care about your children's dental health, but their overall well being.  Give us a call if you have questions about your children's fitness habits.

The Holidays and Your Child's Teeth

October 31st, 2012

With the holidays fast approaching, kids and adults will be tempted with many sugary treats. Here is a tip from your pediatric dentist to help reduce the sugar exposure to your children’s teeth:

Try to minimizing snacking on sugar treats. Constant or frequent snacking doesn’t give your mouth a chance to naturally rinse the sugar (and acid byproducts from bacteria) off the teeth.

So eat that candy bar or finish that piece of cake, but then put the treats away for another day.  And don't forget to go brush your teeth!

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we care about your children's dental health.  Give us a call if you have questions about your children's eating habits.
