It's not only a new year, but a new decade with 2020. Your kid will be using their teeth for the rest of their lives. What resolutions can you make this year to ensure they have a healthy smile?
Brush teeth twice a day. Cleaning teeth is the best preventative measure for your children. Brushing once in the morning and once in the evening for two minutes each decreases the risk of tooth decay.
Floss daily. Toothbrushes can only clean the visible portion of your kids' teeth. Flossing addresses those hard to reach surface areas between teeth.
Visit a pediatric dentist twice a year. Seeing the dentist can identify problems before they become serious. We also provide fluoride treatments and sealants, which will help your child's teeth when brushing and flossing just aren't enough.

Baby teeth are a major milestone for kids. It changes their gummy grins into those of a toddler. But we all know those teeth don't last long. So why, some parents ask, do we need to take such good care of teeth that are only temporary?
While it's true they don't last forever, baby teeth perform several important functions. They play a key role in things like speech development and chewing in your infant. But beyond that, they hold space for their permanent teeth later on. Early loss of baby teeth through decay or extraction can have a negative impact on the alignment of their permanent teeth.
Besides, cavities or decay in primary teeth can result in infection and needless pain. No parent wants their child to go through that. So keep brushing those baby teeth. They may not last long, but they have a big impact on your child's smile.

Halloween and Thanksgiving have both come and gone. We consume a lot of sugary food during this time, and with various winter holidays around the corner, that's not likely to ebb anytime soon.
However, we all know that eating so much bad food is unhealthy for us. For kids particularly, consumption of sugary treats increase the risk for cavities. So in the spirit of a healthy season, here are some suggestions to keep your kid smiling all year round:
- Enjoy physical festive activities. Not all family events require food. Visiting Santa in his workshop, taking a walk around the block, and going to your house of worship are all ways to keep moving during the holidays.
- Substitute fruits over processed sugar. Fruits have natural sugars that don't damage your child's teeth the way processed sugar does. Offer berries, apples, and other fruit when your kid wants something sweet.
- Set reasonable limits. It's okay to want a piece of pie, just keep the portions reasonable and don't follow it up with cake and candy canes too.
- Buy your kids gifts that require them to be active. Sports equipment, bicycle gear, and all things that are meant to be enjoyed outdoors help your kids run around after the holiday feasts are over.

We all know we should floss, but sometimes it's easier said than done. That can go double for kids, since doing any kind of boring chore, even for a long-term gain like healthy teeth, seems so far off.
But keeping your kid cavity-free is an important part of dental health. Here are five tips for getting your child to floss every day.
- Make flossing a regular part of your routine. If your kids do things like read a story every night, then add flossing to the list of stuff that needs to get done before bedtime.
- Create a rewards chart. Simple rewards charts can motivate kids to do chores consistently. Have a fun prize at the end of the month for filling the chart, like a family game night or a trip to a favorite park.
- Try kid flossers. Sometimes using the standard dental floss is hard for little fingers. You can buy brightly colored kids' flossers to make it easier to reach back teeth.
- Play "floss" music. The floss dance is a strange, but fun, kids' dance craze. Leverage that by playing "floss" music where the kids floss their teeth first, then do the floss for you.
- Lead by example. Make it family floss time by flossing together with your kids. When they see you have to do it too, then it's more likely they'll follow.
