The American Dental Association recommends that both adults and kids brush their teeth for 2 minutes at a time, and for good reason. Brushing less might mean missing spots and emerging dental problems over time.
But how can you make sure they brush for the recommended amount of time? Here's some things you can try:
- Use a timer. Either a digital timer or an old-fashioned board game sand timer will work.
- Search your phone's app store. There are a lot of apps out there that entertain kids while they brush while also going the full two minutes. You might find one themed with characters they enjoy.
- Listen to an appropriately length song. Kids songs tend to be shorter, so if you can find a 2-minute song they love, you can play that as they brush.
- Read to them for two minutes. You might find a board book on your bookshelf that you can read in about two minutes.
- Brush with your kids. There's no better way to enforce good habits than by modeling them yourself. If you brush your teeth at the same time as your kids, then everyone in the family will brush long enough.

Due to COVID-19, Northwest Children's Dentistry closed in March on the recommendation of the American Dental Association. Now that we know more about the virus and can take extra precautions, we are reopening May 26, 2020.
That doesn't mean we think the threat of COVID-19 is over. We've taken many precautions to keep both your patients and our staff safe. Here is just a sample of what we have done to reduce the risk of transmission at our office:
- Everyone (including patients, families, and staff) are required to wear masks. This will help us reduce the amount of potential exposure in the air. If you forget to bring a mask, we are happy to provide one for you.
- We will clean our facilities more thoroughly and more often. While our pediatric dental office already had strict cleaning procedures in place, we will be increasing our cleaning and sterilization procedures throughout the day.
- We've improved our building facilities. True-HEPA filtration systems have been installed. More dividers will be put in place to keep people from being in contact with others.
For a full list of new policy procedures and changes, please read our COVID-19 information page.

It is a difficult time for most families right now. Many people (our dental office included) has lost a significant amount of work, which could result in lost pay. On the other hand, some essential workers in health care, retail, and logistics might be experiencing a surge of work at a time where they're not sure they're safe. It is a truly a unique and unpredictable point in global history.
We certainly don't want to overload you with even more stress as the corona virus changes our daily lives. Self-care is very important not only for children, but the families who take care of them. That's why we offer these quick, easy solutions for maintaining your child's dental health during this time:
- Continue brushing at least twice a day. Maintaining a morning and evening brushing routine will help keep a semblance of normalcy in your kids' lives.
- Floss once a day. Choose either the morning or night routine and floss beforehand.
- Eat healthy and exercise where possible. Don't worry about a rigorous diet or a strenuous workout routine, but small things like snacking on fruits and vegetables where possible and going on a long walk while keeping six-feet away from others will improve your overall well-being.
- Call our office if you have a dental emergency. Our phone number remains open: (520) 544-8522. We may not be open for routine and optional visits, but we can certainly help if your child needs us immediately.
